چکیده

Most models of inflation have small parameters, either to guarantee sufficient inflation or the correct magnitude of the density perturbations. In this paper we show that, in supersymmetric theories with weak scale supersymmetry breaking, one can construct viable inflationary models in which the requisite parameters appear naturally in the form of the ratio of mass scales that are already present in the theory. Successful inflationary models can be constructed from the flat-direction fields of a renormalizable supersymmetric potential, and such models can be realized even in the context of a simple GUT extension of the MSSM. We evade naive “naturalness” arguments by allowing for more than one field to be relevant to inflation, as in “hybrid inflation” models, and we argue that this is the most natural possibility if inflaton fields are to be associated with flat direction fields of a supersymmetric theory. Such models predict a very low Hubble constant during inflation, of order 10-10 GeV, a scalar density perturbation index n which is very close to or greater than unity, and negligible tensor perturbations. In addition, these models lead to a large spike in the density perturbation spectrum at short wavelengths. ∗Work supported in part by the Department of Energy under cooperative agreement DE-FC0294ER40818, NSF grant PHY89-04035, NSF Young Investigator Award, Alfred Sloan Foundation Fellowship, and DOE Outstanding Junior Investigator Award. †Supported in part by MIT UROP ‡Work supported in part by the Department of Energy under cooperative agreement DE-FC02-

Reducing the Spectral Index in Supernatural Inflation

Supernatural inflation is an attractive model based just on a flat direction with soft SUSY breaking mass terms in the framework of supersymmetry. The beauty of the model is inferred from its name that the model needs no fine-tuning. However, the prediction of the spectral index is ns > ∼ 1, in contrast to experimental data. In this paper, we show that the beauty of supernatural inflation with ...

D-term Inflation: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Prologo. It is by now commonly accepted that inflation looks more natural in supersymmetric theories rather in non-supersymmetric ones. This is because the necessity of introducing very small parameters to ensure the extreme flatness of the inflaton potential seems very unnatural and fine-tuned in most non-supersymmetric theories, while this naturalness is achieved in supersymmetric models. The...

Extended Inflation from Strings ∗

We study the possibility of extended inflation in the effective theory of gravity from strings compactified to four dimensions and find that it strongly depends on the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking. We consider a general class of string–inspired models which are good candidates for successful extended inflation. In particular, the ω– problem of ordinary extended inflation is automatically...

Hybrid inflation with moduli stabilization and low scale supersymmetry breaking

We study the supergravity hybrid inflation model of Ref. [1] in the presence of a modulus field. The η-problem is solved by a shift symmetry for the inflaton, which protects the inflaton mass even in the presence of the modulus field. Inflation is (nearly) unaffected by moduli stabilization, provided the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the post-inflation vacuum is small. Therefore the model ...
